El Niño has taken on an almost legendary quality, entering the collective mind of the public in the late 1990s as an epic weather pattern. Developing countries dependent upon agriculture and fishing, particularly those bordering the Pacific Ocean, are the most affected.

But what is El Niño, and why does it have such a big impact?
